Environmental Work
The Outing Club promotes discussion of environmental issues, both local and worldwide.  We will also be working on projects with local organizations to plant trees, clean up dumpsites, and promote recycling.  We also enjoy working along with the Environmental Planning and Management Committee and the Environmental Studies Program at Washington and Lee.  If you have any ideas, concerns, or just want to hear what other students have to say, please stop by our Wednesday night meeting or drop us line on e-mail. We'd love to hear from you!

Boxerwood Gardens
Boxerwood is a 15-acre teaching garden, an arboretum of Japanese maples, magnolias, dogwoods and unusual pines.  Boxerwood is a perfect place to teach environmental education because it offers a diversity of ecosystems-- woodlands and open meadows, orchard and shrub plantings, a small pond and a spring-fed bog.  And the magic of Boxerwood catches everyone's attention!  The mission of Boxerwood's nonprofit organization is to "inspire and educate people of all ages toward becoming successful and environmentally responsible stewards of the Earth."

Trail Clean-Up
The Outing Club works to clean a variety of trails in Rockbridge county.  In particular we have focused our attention on House Mountain and the Appalachian Trail.  No experience is needed.  Dress for hard work and bring some water and a snack.  Experienced trail hands are welcome!

Trail clean-up in St. Mary's Wilderness Area

Brushy Hills
Our local favorite area, Brushy Hills is a 600 acre city-owned natural area with trails for horse back riding, mountain biking, hiking and running.  Join us in the ongoing upkeep and improvement of this wonderful place.  Trail construction projects include building new trails,  bridges and benches.

House Mountain
We'll work with RACC to help keep this local treasure beautiful.  With routine maintenance when the weather is good, this is an easy and fun clean-up that ends with great views of the entire county.

Appalachian Trail
Every fall the Washington and Lee University sends freshmen and upperclassmen out onto the Appalachian Trail for five days.  This program Appalachian Adventure, in return sends students back to work with the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club to keep local sections of the A.T. including shelters, outhouses, and bridges looking good.
